Direct Primary Care vs. Traditional Healthcare

Traditional Healthcare can be categorized as outdated and not fully addressing the patient’s needs. Alternatives have been created to provide innovative ideas that provide more efficient healthcare services. One of those alternatives is direct primary care, but how are they different from traditional healthcare? This blog will compare direct primary care and traditional healthcare according to four factors: functionality, patient care, costs, and convenience.

Functionality

Direct primary care works as a subscription service for simple, primary care solutions, meaning a low, monthly fee will be charged. On the other hand, traditional healthcare works by accessing primary care through providers in the insurance networks or paying the total medical bills when insurance is not available.

Patient Care

Regarding this section, there is a significant difference in the purpose for each. While direct primary care is patient-driven, traditional health care is production-driven. To be patient-driven means that patients can expect their appointments to last from 30 to 60 minutes. However, to be production-driven means that the patient gets less time with the medical provider, in order for them to see more patients. Traditional appointments average from 7-12 minutes per patient.

Standard healthcare insurances usually cover expensive medical issues like surgery, for instance, while direct primary care does not.

Costs

Because no one is entirely safe from illness, in the long run, using direct primary care will prove to be more cost-effective than traditional healthcare. This is because direct primary care usually involves an affordable monthly fee with many benefits: unlimited visits, in-office services, discounts on labs, and more. So you have $0 out-of-pocket costs.

With traditional healthcare, doctors will charge you an individual  per service and treatment. If you have insurance, a person will average $15-$20 co-pay costs, or more,  per service or treatment.

Convenience

There is a reduced number of total patients in the system with direct primary care, allowing you to schedule appointments closer to the desired date. In contrast, because traditional healthcare has third-party interference such as insurance and government or industry regulations, longer wait-times may  be constant. With primary care, this is not an issue due to its autonomy.
